Led Zeppelin formed in 1968 and went on to become one of the most influential, innovative, and successful groups in modern music, having sold more than 300 million albums worldwide. The band rose from the ashes of The Yardbirds, when Jimmy Page brought in John Bonham, John Paul Jones, and Robert Plant to tour as The New Yardbirds. In 1969, Led Zeppelin released its self-titled debut which was produced by Page, as were all the subsequent albums. It marked the beginning of a 12-year reign, during which the group was widely considered to be the biggest and most innovative rock band in the world.

Dieu vivant de la guitare, Eric Clapton s’est abîmé dans des addictions multiples avant de revenir à la lumière. Au travers de ses archives personnelles et de ses confessions sans détours, un émouvant portrait de l’artiste et de ses fêlures.

La guitare comme instrument de survie. Gamin du sud de l’Angleterre, Eric Clapton découvre à 9 ans que celle qui l’élève est sa grand-mère, sa véritable mère, enfuie au Canada, ayant refait surface dans sa vie pour le rejeter à nouveau. Marqué au fer rouge par ce double abandon, il trouve dans le blues, qu’il écoute et reproduit jusqu’à l’obsession, une forme d’apaisement. Élève à l’école d’art de Kingston, il intègre sa première formation, The Roosters, à 18 ans, avant de conquérir la scène anglaise avec The Yardbirds. Déçu par le tournant pop pris par le groupe, Eric Clapton claque la porte. Après un passage auprès de John Mayall, il forme avec Ginger Baker et Jack Bruce un trio de blues infusé de rock psychédélique : Cream, qui rivalise avec les Beatles ou les Rolling Stones sans atteindre leur longévité. Après deux ans, le groupe explose et Eric Clapton plonge dans la drogue, rongé par son amour impossible pour Pattie Boyd, la femme de son ami George Harrison, qui lui inspirera l’inoubliable "Layla", chanson-titre de son premier album avec Derek and the Dominos. La fin chaotique du quatuor et la mort de Jimi Hendrix précipitent Eric Clapton dans une spirale destructrice. Revenu sur scène en 1974, il s’y distingue plus par ses débordements éthyliques (et racistes) que par sa virtuosité. Marié avec Pattie en 1979, l’artiste a une fille illégitime, Ruth, puis un garçon, Conor, né en 1986 de son histoire avec un mannequin italien. Après la mort tragique de son fils, tombé du 53e étage d’un gratte-ciel new-yorkais, Eric Clapton, libéré de ses addictions, se réfugie une nouvelle fois dans la musique – comme en témoigne le bouleversant "Tears in Heaven" –, avant de trouver la stabilité auprès de sa seconde épouse et de leurs trois filles.

Génie torturé
"Clapton is God", peut-on lire sur un graffiti londonien. Si Eric Clapton est considéré comme un dieu de la guitare, il a aussi connu son chemin de croix, semé de blessures inguérissables, de deuils et d’autodestruction. Compilant témoignages de proches, confidences sincères de l’intéressé et pépites issues de ses archives personnelles, ce documentaire passionnant plonge dans l’intimité d’un génie torturé sauvé par le blues.
